Wellness is more than the absence of illness.  Wellness includes the presence of energy, joy and relaxation.  Achieving wellness has three components:  physical, emotional and spiritual.  In our Western culture we do a good job of addressing the symptoms of the physical body.  However, this is often done at the exclusion of the emotional and spiritual elements of consciousness.

An increasing number of people are beginning to realize that treatment of one element of wellness without treating the other two can not produce sustainable wellness.  This is the reason for the movement towards an integrative approach for health care; one that combines a variety of modalities with the intent of treating the whole person.   We are quickly learning that there is no "magic bullet" or one practice of health care that is capable of treating all of the problems that can ail us.  For example, if I were to break my arm, I wouldn't see a massage therapist to treat it; I would go the hospital where the allopathic doctors there are excellent at treating this type of problem.  On the other hand, if I had back pain from the emotional and physical stress of daily life, I wouldn't seek a medical prescription for muscle relaxants; I'd see a massage therapist who is trained to help me calm my nervous system and relax the cramping muscle that is causing the pain.

Now, these are pretty obvious examples, however they serve to illustrate the limits of two different modalities of health care.  Understanding the strengths and limits of the health care practitioner you seek, whether they are medical doctors or witch doctors, is an important part of knowing who to seek treatment from and how to best combine these treatments for the most successful outcome.   One important point to remember is that the power to heal lies with yourself, not with your health care practitioner.   That may sound like a radical idea, but let's look at it practically.  In the case of my broken arm example, the doctor hasn't healed my arm, the doctor has helped set the bones back into alignment so that my body can generate new tissue to repair the break.   Too often, however, we see our health care practitioner and ask them to "fix us".  They can not do this.  They can only help us fix ourselves.  After all, no one can know how your body feels other than yourself.

With that in mind, I am continually adding Wellness Tips with the intent of providing information that promotes wellness through the body's own immune system and provokes exploration of emotional and spiritual beliefs.
