The skin is the largest organ of the body used for elimination of metabolic waste products, so much so that it is often referred to as the "third kidney".  This is why massage is so effective in boosting the human immune system.  However, there are techniques that you can use at home to help stimulate the elimination capabilities of the skin.

One third of all metabolic wastes are eliminated through the skin.  Efficient elimination of this toxic waste is very important to maintaining good health.  The techniques of brush massage in conjunction with daily showers, plus regular steam baths, saunas and hot baths will help your skin become more efficient in its function, thereby helping you achieve a greater level of wellness.

To give yourself a dry brush massage, first get a natural bristle brush.  A long handled one is ideal so you can reach all areas of your body.  Starting with your feet, brush firmly with the intent of drawing the lymphatic fluid up your leg to the primary lymph nodes in the pelvis area (see diagram left; click to enlarge).  Brush both feet and legs before moving on.

Then do the same for your hands and arms, working your way up to the primary lymph nodes in your arm pits.  Next work your back brushing from your spine outwards to each side.  Then brush your abdomen working down to your groin area.  Finally, finish by brushing your neck and chest working towards your arm pits.

Brush each area using a stroke that flows toward the primary lymph nodes.  If your not sure about where these are, use the rule of thumb of brushing towards your heart. Do not draw the brush back down again, lift then repeat the stroke.  The best time to perform brush massage is after waking in the morning, or before going to bed at night.

A good way to do brush massage is to make it part of your morning or evening shower/bath routine.  Instead of using a dry brush, add some soap and water to the brush and perform the massage the same way.  You'll boost your immune system and come clean at the same time!  If you do this in the shower, I recommend getting a low flow shower head with a shut off valve to conserve water during the massage.

Happy Brushing!
